Searching for Meaning
"I've abandoned my addiction to the certainty of life
and my need to know everything." - Will Reagan
Do you ever stop and really think? Like really stop and think about the meaning of life. Where we come from. Why we are here. Why good and evil exist. The details on the human hand. That we are on a floating ball of energy in space spinning at 1000 miles per hour. Stuff like that. Do you ever think? Does it make you question the meaning of life? I cannot sleep at night sometimes because my brain just wanders.
Recently my thoughts have been surrounded by the idea of meaning. I have been searching. Looking. My brain wonders and dances around the idea of meaning. I sit and ponder about random stuff throughout the day. Comedian Ralphie May was right, at least about me, when he said, "Men love to just sit and think about nothin'. We love it!"
I recently posted on Facebook and said, "Explain the meaning of life to me." I got many responses like scriptures and "family" and "love". Typical answers. But I was kind of surprised that not one person admitted to not figuring it out yet. My personal response would be "To glorify God and worship Him forever." We all think we have it figured out. Even me. I think my answer is the best one. But to be honest, I don't think any of us know the absolute truth about the meaning of life.
When it comes down to it, I believe in something greater than myself. I believe in a creator. I believe there is good and bad for a reason. I believe there is a reason for family and love. That is why I personally put my faith in God. I put my faith in Jesus.
I study Christianity and its 40,000 different denominations. I try to listen and learn about the perspectives of others. Atheists. Muslims. Buddhism. Mormonism. There are so many perspectives. And to me it just looks like we all are searching for something greater than ourselves because humanity is flawed. I have admitted that I don't truly know why I am here. But while I am living, I am going to love and do good to people. I pray they do the same to me. I don't have all the answers but I know the one who does.
If you wanna talk to me about this, call me. I want to hear your thoughts. (615) 428-7964.
My reading recommendation this post is Mark Batterson's, "The Circle Maker." It will absolutely change the way you pray.
